Acupuncture

Ellie Cliff BVSc MRCVS, performs acupuncture at Rowe Referrals. Ellie is a member of the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists (ABVA) and can offer conventional 'dry needling' and electro-acupuncture.

Veterinary acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine in which thin needles are inserted into certain points on an animal's body to stimulate natural healing and reduce pain. This holistic approach to veterinary care has been used for many years in traditional Chinese medicine and is gaining popularity as a complementary therapy.

Ellie uses her knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology to apply acupressure techniques, identify certain points, and treat various ailments such as musculoskeletal issues, disorders and dysfunctions.

Oncology / Electrochemotherapy

Our oncology service is led by Dr Elisa Best BVSc Cert SAS CSAVP (Oncology) MRCVS RCVS, Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery, who is qualified in both surgery and oncology.

Elisa can perform oncological surgery with an understanding of tumour biology as well as adjuvant (follow up) treatments including chemotherapy and electrochemotherapy. Elisa works closely with our visiting imager Mags Costello MVB DVR Dip.ECVDI MRCVS, European Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging for staging cancer patients.

Elisa offers the following:

  • Oncology consultations for advice
  • Oncological surgery
  • Electrochemotherapy
  • Cancer patient staging including CT and ultrasound/ultrasound guided sampling
  • Chemotherapy

Electrochemotherapy is a local treatment for tumours that uses a combination of IV or intralesional chemotherapy combined with the application of short electric pulses to the tissues. The current causes the cell membranes to temporarily open allowing drugs to enter into the cancer cell (electroporation). This process results in greater drug uptake by the cell compared to injection or tablets. After the electrical pulses stop, the membrane seals allowing the cells to continue to live (reversible electroporation) which is important for normal tissues around the tumour. However, the tumour cells will die due to the effect of the drug that has entered the cell.

Electrochemotherapy can be used either on its own or in combination with surgery.

Laparoscopy

At Rowe Referrals, laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery is performed by our skilled and experienced soft tissue surgeon, Dr Elisa Best BVSc Cert SAS CSAVP (Oncology) MRCVS RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery.

This minimally invasive technique involves using a small camera and specialised instruments to perform surgeries with smaller incisions, resulting in reduced pain, faster recovery times, and improved cosmetic outcomes compared to traditional open surgery.

CT Scanning

CT scanning at Rowe Referrals is a valuable diagnostic tool that allows for detailed visualisation of internal structures in animals. By providing high-resolution cross-sectional images, CT scans enable clinicians to accurately diagnose and evaluate various conditions such as tumours, orthopaedic injuries and neurological disorders.

The technology also aids in treatment planning by assisting surgeons in identifying the precise location of abnormalities and guiding them during complex surgical procedures. Additionally, CT scanning is particularly useful for patients who may not tolerate traditional imaging methods due to their sedation requirements or the need for rapid image acquisition. Overall, CT scanning in veterinary referral practice plays a critical role in delivering advanced medical care to patients ultimately helping to improve outcomes and quality of life.

MRI

At Rowe Referrals, we have a 3.0 Tesla onsite MRI scanner available - one of only a few used clinically across Europe. The high field strength allows us a much more detailed view of our cases in comparison with lower field scanners, increasing our diagnostic yield, and the ability to perform more complex investigations including functional MRI (fMRI) and non-contrast angiographic studies with greater clarity.

MRI is used at Rowe Referrals across all disciplines, and although it is routinely used in the investigation and diagnosis of neurology/neurosurgical cases it is invaluable as a diagnostic tool with ophthalmic and retrobulbar disease, orthopaedic conditions (particularly helpful with the investigation of joint disease) as well as soft tissue/muscular disorders.

For further information or advice, please do not hesitate to contact the team on 01454 521000, email mri@rowevetgroup.com or refer a case using our online referral form.

Ultrasonography

Mags Costello MVB DVR Dip.ECVDI MRCVS, European Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging, offers imaging consultations at our Bradley Stoke Hospital. Mags currently uses a state-of-the-art digital system equipped with colour and power Doppler, with a choice of probes meaning every size of animal is well catered for.

As well as abdominal and thoracic ultrasonography, Mags routinely scans any part of the body including parathyroid and thyroid, musculoskeletal scans (e.g. tendons and joints), ocular scans and soft tissues in search of foreign material.

Radioactive Iodine Therapy

It is well established that feline hyperthyroidism is a progressive condition, with the presence of severe disease, suspected thyroid malignancy, and resistance to medical treatment all increasing with disease duration. This thyroid pathology cannot be arrested by management with chronic antithyroid drugs and therefore early treatment with a curative therapy such as radioactive iodine is ideal.

The radioactive iodine unity at Rowe Referrals is led by Liz Jennings BVSc CertAVP(SAM-F) MANZCVS (Medicine of Cats) MRCVS Advanced Practitioner in Feline Medicine, who has over 10 years’ experience of treating hyperthyroid cats with radioactive iodine.

Cases are seen by our neurology service with an accurate assessment being achieved by hands-on physical and neurological examinations, and with the use of our on-site state-of-the-art 3.0T MRI and 16-slice CT scanners.

Our surgeons Ian Jennings BVSc BSc CertVDI MRCVS, Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Neurology & Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging and Dr Elisa Best BVSc Cert SAS CSAVP (Oncology) MRCVS, Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery, offer same day, decompressive surgery including hemilaminectomy and ventral slot procedures for acute disk extrusions, with continued treatment at our 24-hour hospital with dedicated out of hours staff.

Common surgeries Ian performs include;

  • Decompressive surgery for acute intervertebral disc extrusions
  • Cervical discs - A ventral slot is usually performed although lateral dorsal laminectomy or facetectomy may be required for some compressive lesions
  • Thoracolumbar discs - A hemilaminectomy is the most commonly practised procedure however pediculectomy (mini-hemilaminectomy) can be more appropriate for some ventrally located extrusions
  • Lumbosacral discs - Dorsal laminectomy gives the best access to an extrusion in this region.
  • Chronic disc protrusions (or longer standing extrusions) of the thoracolumbar spine can also treated surgically with pediculectomy and partial lateral corpectomy (removal of part of the vertebral body) to allow decompression with a reduced risk of further spinal cord injury.

We have close links with tertiary referral specialist neurosurgeons and surgery for other conditions i.e., degenerative lumbosacral disease, subarachnoid diverticulae and tumours are managed on a case-by-case basis in collaboration.
