An Introduction to Veterinary Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is the science and application of anatomy, bio-dynamics, physiology, physics and psychology to a person or animal with an injury, pain or dysfunction.
It is an established treatment in human medicine and growing in recognition in veterinary medicine, with horses, dogs and cats benefiting from treatment as people do.
Veternary approved referrals are a requirement for Veterinary Physiotherapy.
Veterinary Physiotherapists have been awarded an MSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy from the Royal Veterinary College. They are fully qualified to treat both large and small animals.
Physiotherapy Assessment to an Effective Treatment
The initial assessment will involve a full examination of the animal prior to treatment, which is discussed and agreed with the owner. Treatment may include techniques such as:
- Joint manipulation
- Soft tissue mobilisation techniques such as laser, ultrasound, muscle stimulation or electro-magnetic therapies
- Progressive exercise rehabilitation
- Expert advice

Common Complaints Helped by Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy can be indicated for a variety of acute and chronic conditions which include:
- Trauma or soft tissue injuries to muscle, tendon and ligaments
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Post-orthopaedic surgery
- Neurological conditions
- Reduced function, stiffness and muscle weakness in ageing animals
- Sports injuries or performance related problems in the animal athlete
- Pain in animals shown by an unexpected change in behaviour
- Functional difficulties

Liason with the Veterinary Surgeon and other members of the multi-disciplinary team, such as a sadler, farrier and canine hydrotherapy centres is an important part of the treatment.
