Rowe Referrals Update Summer 2004
Imaging news
The mobile MRI service has been kept very busy this year and has now been supplemented by the addition of a regular mobile CT scanning session. Ring for dates.
CT has the advantage over MRI of speed. MRI scans have a much longer 'exposure time' than CT and whilst they provide superior soft tissue representation moving organs such as the heart are more difficult to image. CT comes into its own in these situations allowing excellent visualisation of heart and lung tissue. CT is also a very powerful tool for unravelling complex bony structures most notably the elbow, tarsus and carpus.
With the increasing number of neurology patients referred for MRI or CT scanning we are pleased to be able to welcome Mr Mike Targett, a neurologist from Cranmore Referrals in Cheshire. Mike is available to provide neurology consults prior to MRI scanning and this will be offered to you at the time of booking.
Further exciting imaging news is that Maggs Costello, known to many of you because of her ambulatory imaging service, has been offering diagnostic imaging referrals based at our Bristol hospital for much of this year. Maggs provides much more than ultrasonography, regularly using advanced ultrasound guided biopsy techniques which allow histological diagnoses with very short recovery times. Appointments can be arranged through the Rowe Referrals reception on 01454 275000.
'Holá Elena' - Ophthalmology Intern.
We are very pleased to welcome Elena Romero, our new Ophthalmology intern, who joined us in April. Elena who hails from the beautiful Valencian region of Spain has a passion for Ophthalmology and is currently studying towards the Royal College certificate. Elena has already proven an invaluable member of the team.
Elena spends much of her spare time studying for the Certificate however she enjoys walking with her crazy Cavilier puppy, Bolá (spanish for ball!). We are also due to welcome Elena's partner, Domingo Cocho, to the practice after he has finished the Certificate in Small Animal Medicine examinations in a few weeks time. Domingo has a particular interest in cardiology and ultrasonography and we are looking forward to learning from him in the coming months.
Please contact us if you wish to discuss or refer a case on 01454 275000.

Cataract Service launched
Tim Knott has been offering phacoemulsification for the treatment of cataracts and luxated lenses since January. Phacoemulsification has been the gold standard technique for cataract surgery for many years now. Cataract surgery still remains a highly demanding procedure however success rates continue to improve year on year and it is one of the most satisfying parts of our work here. The timely arrival of Elena has allowed Tim more time to concentrate on developing this service which we hope will continue to expand with the arrival of our third Ophthalmologist.
New Equine Ophthalmologist - Visiting Equine referral service to be launched.
The service continues to expand with the imminent arrival of Brian Patterson in October. Brian is a Veterinary Ophthalmologist with a particular interest in Equine Ophthalmology. Brian's arrival will coincide with our plans to extend our equine facilities at our Wotton-under-Edge hospital.
With Brian's arrival we will be offering an Ambulatory Ophthalmology service for both medical and surgical consults. We envisage this being of particular interest for equine patients where travelling to our equine unit might discourage referral. If you are interested in arranging either a regular or occasional visiting Ophthalmology clinic at your practice please contact Tim on 01454 415478 or timknott@rowevetgroup.com.
Brian graduated from the Edinburgh in 1996 and worked in a predominantly small animal practice for one year before taking up an intern position at the Liphook Equine Hospital, Hampshire. There then followed two years of ambulatory equine practice in Sussex at the Arundel equine hospital before returning to Scotland to undertake a residency program in equine medicine (with special reference to Ophthalmology) at Glasgow University. It was whilst working here that he received the Certificate in Veterinary Ophthalmology. He is currently working towards an Equine ophthalmology based Masters degree.
Outside of work any free time he has left is used taking muddy walks with his five year old Springer spaniel and marathon training. Brian will also be joined at the practice by his partner, Myra, this Autumn. Myra Stevenson is currently completing a residency programme at Edinburgh University and like Domingo will join the practice in October following her Certificate in Small Animal Medicine exams. We look forward to her arrival and are sure that her expertise will be an asset to the practice.
We continue to offer referrals for Exotic animal medicine and surgery, Dermatology, Internal Medicine, Behaviour and Surgery.
