A one day course covering cancer biology, cancer staging, treatment, common tumours and the future of Veterinary oncology. Rob Harper will be our main speaker for the day with a session on ocular on-cology in small animal and equine patients from the eye team.

Topics covered will include

  • Ethics & aims of cancer management
  • Basic cancer biology
  • The language/terminology of cancer management - what it means and why it is important.
  • An overview of a typical workup of a cancer case from consultation onwards to include a discussion of treatment options both for practice and at referral institutions.
  • How and where to search for further information and how to evaluate the worth of that information.
  • Common difficult small animal cancers - Dogs: oral melanoma, osteosarcoma, splenic haemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, mast cell tumour - Cats: oral squamous cell carcinoma, lymphoma.
  • Palliative care including "quality of life" assessment.
  • Future treatments - what is being evaluated at the "cutting edge" and how likely is it to be relevant to general practice.
  • Ophthalmic oncology - common companion animal cancers involving the eye.
