Practical Oncology for the General Practitioner

A one day course covering cancer biology,
cancer staging, treatment, common tumours and the future of Veterinary
oncology. Rob Harper will be our main speaker for the day with a
session on ocular on-cology in small animal and equine patients from
the eye team.

Topics covered will include

Ethics & aims of cancer management

Basic cancer biology

The language/terminology of cancer management - what it means and why it is important.

An overview of a typical
workup of a cancer case from consultation onwards to include a
discussion of treatment options both for practice and at referral
institutions.

How and where to search for further information and how to evaluate the worth of that information.

Common difficult small animal
cancers - Dogs: oral melanoma, osteosarcoma, splenic haemangiosarcoma,
lymphoma, mast cell tumour - Cats: oral squamous cell carcinoma,
lymphoma.

Palliative care including "quality of life" assessment.

Future treatments - what is being evaluated at the "cutting edge" and how likely is it to be relevant to general practice.

Ophthalmic oncology - common companion animal cancers involving the eye.
